4º British: Filming an historical movie

Your new task this term will be: filming an historical short movie! Today, with the daily-use technology is quite easy to became a film director, and that could be a great educational activity, don’t you think so? J

You can do it individually, in pairs or in groups. These are the basic requirements:

  • The main issue must be one of the topics from this year’s syllabus.
  • The story should be historically correct: you can be creative about secondary things (locations, music, clothes, etc.) but the characters should do real historical facts, specially if you choose the option of a documentary movie (maybe you should check for primary sources before preparing the dialogues and speeches...).
  • The final product should last between 5 and 9 minutes
  • After those minutes, you should include the author’s credits
  • The video must be in .avi or .mp4 format

Let’s start with some help... In the following document you can learn about the steps of filming a movie and its technical aspects, such as types of shoots (planos) and camera’s angles.

When finish, send the video by wetransfer.com (and any extra material that you have created) to acarriles@educa.jcyl.es. The deadline will be 13 May. After the revisions and qualifications, we will have our own Film Festival (Friday, 17 May). This activity is mandatory; remember that, as usual, if you don’t do it, or you do it out of time, the mark for this activity will be 0.

Be creative and enjoy the activity. Good luck!

1º British: The myth of Atlantis / the fall of the Minoans

More than two thousand years ago, the Greek historian Plato wrote about Atlantis, the fabled civilization that was swallowed by the sea. But the origins of Plato’s story have never been identified… until now?

Five thousand years ago, the Minoans, Europe’s first great civilization, flourished on Crete. The sophisticated inhabitants, named after the legendary King Minos, were the first Europeans to use a written language, known as Linear A, and the first to construct paved roads. They were an advanced society of highly-cultivated artisans and extremely skilled civic engineers. The Minoans were excellent ship builders and sailors, and their maritime empire was so vast, it rivaled that of the ancient Egyptians. But inexplicably, at the height of their power, the Minoans were wiped from the pages of history.

The island of Santorini, 70 miles north of Crete, was home to the wealthiest Minoan seaport... next to the volcano Thera. Around 1600, B.C., an eruption occurred. The Theran eruption was one of largest in human history — blasting more than 10 million tons of ash, gas, and rock 25 miles into the atmosphere. And it was followed by a tsunami...

The following documentary film from BBC (2011) is a good review of what happened in Thera: ATLANTIS: End of a World - Birth of a Legend. You can watch the trailer here.

4º British: Seven Samurai, by Akira Kurosawa

Now that we are studying Japan, maybe you would find useful the following link from the University of South Australia. It is a very complete and interesting video of the Meiji era (8 minutes).

Besides, as we have mentioned in class, one of the greatest film directors of all times was the japanese Akira Kurosawa. You can watch the trailer of one of his most famous movies: “Sichinin no samurai” (“The seven samurai”)

Believed or not, this film was adapted later by Hollywood as Western and even animation movie... Even the personality of their heroes are the same!

If you want to know more about Kurosawa, have this 20-minute documentary on youtube.

Finally, and if you are curious about the language, you can learn the basics of Japanese (alphabet, numbers, colors, ...) on the web digital dialects. J

4º British: Suffragette

Yesterday, we explained the "Female Suffrage Movement" in UK. Today, we will complete the task by watching the official trailer of a new movie (Universal Pictures. First release in Spain: 18 December 2015... That is next week!) and by doing a small opinion activity:

Answer the following questions, as complete as possible. When finish, send them as an attached document to blogeducativo08@gmail.com.

1.What do you think Suffragists and Suffragettes would look back on with most satisfaction?

2.What do you regard as the greatest achievement and the greatest failure of Suffragists and Suffragettes?

3.Do you think that Suffragists or Suffragettes achievements most outweight their failures? Why?

4.Do you think that Suffragettes direct actions damaged the campaign for female suffrage? Why?

5.Do you think that Feminism is still necessary? Why? Give at least 3 well-argumented reasons.

6.What do you think about the following sentence? Do you agree with it? Why?
“I call myself feminist when people ask me if I am, and of course I am, ‘cause it’s about equality, so I hope everyone is. You know you’re working in a patriarchal society when the word feminist has a weird connotation” (Ellen Page).

Go on!

By the way, if you are particulary into this topic, you can voluntary watch the BBC serie: Suffragettes forever! (3 chapters, 1 hour each).

Debate: Million Dollar Baby

Referentes personales positivos
  • Expectativas de futuro, el valor del esfuerzo
  • Problemas éticos: la eutanasia

4º British: Historical films

As I promised you in class, here you have a list of Historical movies, related with the syllabus of 4º E.S.O. As we are talking about Contemporary History, there are many options, ones more modern than others... (from 1927 to 2012). But I am sure that you will find something that you like in a list of 60 films! Enjoy! J

I have tried to include a couple of movies in each unit. Obviously, there are only some examples to ilustrate the topics you are studying, but it is not a thorough list. So, in case you miss one film that it is accurate to the historical facts it is trying to shown, please report it to me and I will include it in a future update.

By the way, after reading the list... which one of those movies you would like to watch? Leave you comments on the blog!

4º British: Unit 12 Russian Revolution

Here you have the first topic of the next term... The good news is that there will be no exam of this unit! J With the book’s review (“Animal Farm”) and the weekly work, it will be more than enough.
